Great Lakes Decoy Show 2013

How's everyone doing?  Well, we're doing great!  Just got back on Sunday from an excellent 5 days in Westlake, Ohio.  Folks, believe me when I tell you the Great Lakes Decoy Association Show is alive and well.  We enjoyed our time there very much and look forward to returning next year.  Hats off to all the people who worked so hard to make this years show a success.  The room to room trading was steady action throughout the event with sales being pretty good.  Found some nice additions for the collection, picked up some other items via trades and of course the auction on Saturday morning.  Guyette, Schmitt, & Deeter had a nice selection of decoys, a few calls, and some other odds and ends on the auction block. We had a wonderful time at the closing dinner Saturday night and hope that becomes a yearly event.  Was a very nice way to wind down and end the weeks events.  Fun Fun Fun! Well, one more month till St. Charles will be here.  Look forward to seeing everyone there.  Come look us up for some Goose Jerky and a cold one.[gallery columns="4" ids="350,343,347,348,349,344,345,346"] Dave & Jeannette

Recent Show updates

Well, we've entered the busy season for decoys shows and they're in full swing!  Started out by going to the Great White North...That's right, the Minnesota Decoy Show.  This show is always a very well run show with excellent attendance.  The room to room trading may have been a little slower then normal this year due to the 15 below zero temperature on Thursday, but Friday and Saturday at the show, there was plenty of public attendance and quite a few smiling faces leaving with a bird or two tucked under their arm.  I can't stress enough how well ran this even is.  Fabulous show ran by very helpful folks up there.  Great job as usual. Next event for us was the Edgerton, Wisc. show which is a one day event held at the local Community Center.  This is a long running show that always seems to produce a couple nice buys along the way.  This was my first time setting up at this show and I plan on returning next year to set up. On to Henry, Illinois.  Without question, this one day 8am-2pm show is the best attended outdoor sporting collectible event.  Another year with around 1000 people attending.  Simply put, if you want a nice Illinois River bird, this is the place to come.  The amount of people that come to this show is amazing.  As usual this was again a well ran show, and again this year Guyette, Schmidt, & Deeter Auction firm was there for appraisals and information on your wooden decoy treasures as well as calls.  If you didn't make any of these events, fear not, there's still more to come.  The Oshkosh show as well as the Great Lakes show, and of course the Grand Daddy of them all- the National at St. Charles are all right around the corner.  Those upcoming shows are listed in our prior blog, as well as the Illinois Valley show in August, but if you have any questions, just drop us a line.  Below are a couple pictures from the Henry Show- As always, Thanks ~  Dave & Jeannette    henry1 henry2 henry3 henry4 henry5 henry6

Collecting Illinois River Decoys

I have a couple friends that recently developed an interest in collecting duck decoys.  They asked me what I look for in an Illinois River bird.  Well, here goes... My particular likes are fairly simple, for me older is better.  One of my favorite decoys is an old Elliston Mallard Hen I bought from the Joe French Collection.  It isn't a great decoy, but its age, original paint, and of course the weight with Elliston stamped on it is a great combo. I prefer original paint, but don't mind "old" hunter repaints.  The paint job on most Illinois River decoys are very life-like, even in today's decoy world. The big name carvers are always nice to look at but some names don't get enough attention.  Mario Pioletti from Spring Valley seems to fly under the radar in a lot of decoy circles.  Another interesting name is Julio Busto from Depue who made some very nice birds with good paint jobs.  After talking with these young fellas for a while, they came to the same conclusion:  Just find one you like and buy it! I will end this post with a list of ten carvers, in no particular order, I like that don't get noticed as much as the big names but are keeper decoys.
  • Mario Pioletti - Very good paint on his birds.
  • Julio Busto - Nice curves, few decoys made.
  • Fred Destri - Excellent feather painting.
  • William Zarnicki - Nice carvings, birds are a little oversized.
  • Coleman Bassett - Great Illinois River characteristics.
  • Chiado decoys - Many to choose from, hunting birds.
  • Fred Coleman - Very nice miniatures.
  • Koehler decoys - Made by several family members, stamped weights.
  • Bill Williams - Older birds, tough to find.
  • Goose Podowicz - Earlier birds, although hard to find, are very nicely crafted.
